From jiggly toddler to science nerd

My love affair with movement began at the tender age of three, with wobbly jigs to music (though my Mum would tell you I started even earlier!). Eleven years of pirouetting through various dance styles followed, culminating in a passion for the diverse world of Ballroom and Latin. This wasn't just about graceful leaps; it was a community filled with supportive competitors and teachers who championed joy above all else.

 

Turning professional, I met Pilates. Its profound impact led me to become an instructor.

 

Yet, niggling doubts arose. My dance-honed understanding clashed with the rigid rules and movement recommendations of Pilates training. No one had answers, and blindly following "dos and don'ts" just didn't feel right.

 

Why does pain plague so many who seek Pilates for relief? We blame posture, alignment, imbalances, and strive to "correct" them. But some improve, while others don't. Why?

Enter Rossiter Stretching. "Pain crusher!" I thought, diving headfirst into certification. Results were impressive, but not universal. Again, why?

​

As the UK Trainer for Rossiter, I loved mentoring new coaches. But my thirst for answers led me deep into the science of pain and exercise, sparking a science-nerd journey I never imagined! Each layer unravelled, revealing muddied waters (no wonder we were all confused!).

​

Acknowledging the role of the brain in creating the experience of pain, I trained as a Pain Reprocessing Therapist and delved into Internal Family Systems. Along with Rossiter Stretching and Pilates I'm able to offer a truly unique, science based approach to coaching clients out of pain.

​

The lack of absolute answers in science couldn't dim the brilliance of this discovery: empowered by science-based knowledge, clients shed fear, took control, and defied the industry's cookie-cutter approach to health.

 

Then my children became my teachers. One diagnosed with hypermobility, the other facing learning challenges.

 

My research shifted, exploring hypermobility, neurodiversity and the science of learning to better support and advocate.

​

The connections exploded! Early exposure to societal expectations can trigger lasting trauma (cue trauma research). With trauma's impact on body and mind, too, often overlooked and misunderstood, it's no wonder that many are suffering in silence, flying underneath the radar of our healthcare system.

​

My 46-year-old self thought I had myself figured out, then knowledge dropped a plot twist: my diagnosis of hypermobility and ADHD! It was like cracking open a hidden library within myself – a treasure trove of explanations for quirks and contradictions I'd always chalked up to life's weirdness. This new lens exposed the misalignment in society's approach to health and wellness, and it ignited a passion to bridge the gap.
